If sportsmen were related, surfers and open water swimmers could be considered close cousins.

In 1964 when director Bruce Brown made his first Endless Summer film, there were only 4 countries where there was surfing. Over the last generation, surfing has proliferated around the world.

Open water swimming has similarly spread its wings throughout the globe – and similarities between the sports are obvious.

The title of Endless Summer comes from the idea that if one had enough time and money it is possible to follow the summer around the world, making it endless. With a bucket list like the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims, many open water swimmers also wish to follow summer around the world, doing an endless number of swims in the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers.

The Endless Summer’s distribution history may also provide some inspiration to open water swimming film makers.

Brown took Endless Summer to several Hollywood studio distributors, but his film was rejected because they did not think it would have mainstream appeal. In January, he showed the film to sold-out audiences in Kansas where moviegoers lined up in a snowy weather to watch surfers’ summer fun. Distributors were still not convinced so Brown rented a theater in New York City where the film ran successfully for a year. After the success of the run, it gained national distribution and went on to gross over US$20 million.

The full-length 1 hour 49 minute Endless Summer II film is below:

With Brown’s legacy well-established in the film world, what producer or film maker will leave a similar legacy with an open water swimming film?

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
