If you have not been to Anilao in the Philippines and you love warm, tropical, beautiful waters, then this area in the province of Batangas, a two-hour drive from Manila, is for you.

The small barrio of Anilao has been the favorite diving destination by locals for as long as people can remember – and has been a secret gem among foreign visitors for decades. Guy Concepcionorganizes the annual Speedo 3.5.8 Open Water Swim Masters Series that offers a 3km, 5km and 8km open water swims in a gorgeous setting.

London Olympian Jessie Khing Lacuna swam 2800-meters more than his usual 200 freestyle pool event to capture the 3km men’s race. Wilven Hussin of Quest 825 Triathlon Team won the men’s 5km, and Nonoy Basa of Clear Sabak Triathlon Team came in first in the 8km.

Fast becoming a well-known personality in the local open water swimming and triathlon communities, 8km runner-up was Arnel Aba, an above-the-knee amputee, who upon reaching the 8km finish, quickly turned around and swam a few hundred meters more for a cool down.

Victors among the women’s divisions included Ironman Hawaii veteran Sandra Gonzales in the 3km, former swimmer and now ultra-marathoner Keisha Fule of Scott-Soleus Multisport in the 5km, and Filipino elite triathlete LC Langit of Polo Tri Team in the 8km.

Organized by Sports Management Solutions, and supported by Speedo, Gatorade, World Balance, Studio 23, and Summit Water, the Speedo 358 Open Water series has dual aims to become a venue that showcases the beautiful ocean waters surrounding the Philippines and to serve as the catalyst to develop competitive open water swimmers who can participate in the FINA World Cup circuit and Olympic Games marathon swim.

Says former Philippine national coach and swimmer Concepcion, “International open water races should be staged in our country because we undeniably have beautiful beaches with beautiful water that go with it.”

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
