One of the world’s mightiest marathon swims is always held in Argentina during the first week of February. The Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe – Coronda attracts the finest young professional marathon swimmers in the world year after year. Racing hour after hour down the Río Coronda, the race first start in 1961.

The aquatic marathon swim was first called the Maratón Fluvial del Litoral Argentino, won by Carlos Larriera.

During the 1960′s, the marathon grew and quickly attracted the attention of the Argentine media and the local people while the word-of-mouth spread among the best professional marathon swimmers in the world. During the 1970′s, economic realities of the time led to fewer of the best swimmers making their way to Coronda. The 1980′s saw interruptions in the annual race, but the event began in earnest again in 1987. During the 1990′s, the event flourished again and evolved into one of the major races on the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix circuit.

50 years in the making, over 100,000 spectators line the 57 km course along the Río Coronda, cheering on swimmers from all the major continents. The event is massively covered by television broadcasters, cable systems, radio, online, newspapers and magazines.

For these reasons, as well as the decades of marathon swimmers flocking to Argentina, the Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe – Coronda is considered one of the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims.

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
