For centuries, there have been numerous formal and informal open water swimming pods from Kyoto to Rome.

In seas and rivers, oceans and lochs, these pods rarely fail to have colorful characters amid their ranks.

These open water swimming pods range from the contemporary cruisers like the Oak Streeters and Sea Monkeys in Southern California to the Phibbies of the classically named Ye Amphibious Ancient Bathing Association in Scotland.

Tied by traditional and linked by the Internet, these teams are a welcome mat at the grassroots level, attracting swimmers of every age, ability and background. Many participants simply enjoy the camaraderie of the pod; others seek improvement for competition’s sake. Some members participate year-round; others join annually during the warmer summer months. Some use neoprene; others depend entirely on bioprene. Some can handle only short swims; others long for channel challenges.

Since 1884, Ye Amphibious Ancient Bathing Association has been a voluntary organisation committed to the teaching and coaching open water swimming to Phibbies of all ages. Lead by its Chief Ancient, the Association combines the use of a pool with the natural environment of several open water swimming events to provide a comprehensive plethora of opportunities for open water swimmers.

Onwards in its second century of success, the Ye Amphibious Ancient Bathing Association promotes a number of events including the New Year’s Day Dook (a Polar Bear social event), 1-mile Club Single Tay Championship, 8-mile Kirkton Of Balmerino Championship, 1-mile Tayport Cup Championship, 1-mile Single Tay Championship, 4-mile Club Senior Championship, 3.25-mile Monifieth Championship, 300m Club Under 12 Dash, 2-mile Double Tay Championship, 4-mile Woodhaven Championship, 1-mile Bridge To Bridge Championship, 6.5-mile Loch Earn Championship, and the 1-mile Crannog Isle Championship.

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
