The swimming community, sports fans and the media consider open water swimming to be a new sport.

Introduced to the global sporting community at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, open water swimming is relatively recent addition to the vernacular of the world of athletics.

But we consider open water swimming to be new like real-time wireless communications is considered new.

That is, open water swimming and real-time wireless communications have always been around, but they were simply recognized in different forms by previous generations of humans. That being said, throughout modern history (i.e., the 20th century), much of the personal, point-to-point communications were done through wires and much of the competitive and fitness swimmers practiced through strokes in pools.

But way before the iPhone, NTT DoCoMo, the Internet and Facebook, people communicated by bonfires, whistles, smoke signals and semaphores, all real-time wireless communication tools. Similarly, well before the widespread advent of pools, people swam and competed in open bodies of water. Long ago, open water swimming was simply referred to swimming.

For example, 30 years before FINA – the world’s governing body of aquatics – was established to govern swimming, Captain Matthew Webb had crossed the English Channel. 200 years before the first swimming race was held in the modern Olympics in Athens in 1896, the Upsala Simsällskap swimming team was formed in Uppsala, Sweden.

Because wireless communication access is enabled by a comprehensive underground or unseen wired network, some observers have commented that “wireless isn’t”.

And so we ponder: is it true that open water swimming always was and will forever be as long as humans occupy the Planet Earth?

THE DRAMA OF THE SPORT
Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
