Stephen Redmond of Ireland is hard core. Hardened like a diamond.

So are the Black Rock Icebergers of Melbourne and the 1.PKO swimmers in Prague, Czech Republic.

Summer, winter, autumn or spring, these swimmers – and thousands like them from San Francisco to Sweden – understand that all seasons are open water swimming seasons.

But not everyone is so hard core and willing to subject themselves to water under 10°C (50°F). For those less willing to push themselves in cooler waters, the comforts and safety of the outdoor salt-water swimming pools provide a welcomed respite to the rigors of winter swimming in the open water.

Kits Pool on Kits Beach in Vancouver, Canada and the San Alfonso del Mar Resort pool in Algarrobo, Chile are examples of over-sized pools that open water swimmers can enjoy. The Kitsilano Pool is 137 meters (150 yards) long, enabling a 10 km marathon swim to be done in 73 laps. The heated salt-water pool sits in the heart of Kitsilano that was once named one of the world’s sexiest beaches.

With its turquoise water, its spectacular views of the ocean and mountains glittering across English Bay, the lifeguards are tenacious in keeping the swimming lanes free to serious swimmers.

Time lapse video of the Kits pool was created by Terry David Silvercloud with music by Romosel.

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
