The weather is dropping, the clothes are coming off, and thebioprene is showing.

The sport of open water swimming has been showcased in Windermere, the largest lake in England, for decades. Just not in the middle of winter. But that is going to change on February 2nd 2013.

The work of Colin Hill, the former British Gas Great Swim series director and Marathon Swimming Technical Operations Manager for the 2012 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim, usually has wider implications for the sport of open water swimming. He is a visionary and his actions are many times a precursor for what will follow.

After he organized the Great Swim series which now draws tens of thousands to the shores around the United Kingdom and after he orchestrated the marathon swimming showpiece at the 2012 London Olympic Games, he is now off on his own open water swimming company Chillswim.

Chillswim’s first event, a winter swimming race, gives us a hint of what is to come. His Big Chill Swim is set in the beautiful Lake District in England on February 2nd. Already extreme swimmers have booked their flights from Latvia, Finland and South Africa to take part in the 30m breaststroke, 60m freestyle, 4 x 30m relay team and 450m endurance swim. Also taking part is International Ice Swimming Association founder Ram Barkai of South Africa and Jack Bright who will exhibit his Winter Swimming documentary. Afterwards, Hill has arranged a post-race celebration meal and barn dance at race central, the lovely Low Wood Hotel Resort on the shore of Windermere.

As Hill says, “Challenge yourself to one of the coldest swimming races you’ll ever do!”

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
