It is an incredible feeling when you dive into the water …the water is 0°C. The most immediate reaction is massive, massive hyper-ventilation.

And then following that, you start losing feeling in all your fingers and all your toes…

…extreme pain,” explains Lewis Pugh about his 18-minute 1 km swim in Petermann Island off the Antarctic Peninsula in 2005.

And then it starts to move up your arms until you can no longer feel your arms and legs. And all your blood has gone to your core in order to protect your core. It’ not the kind of place where you would want to spend a lot of time swimming.

Not a lot of time, but his 18-minute swim – one of four documented swims in Antarctica - is an example of how far humans can push themselves in the open water.

An Inspirational Cause… A Successful Event

SWIM ACROSS AMERICA, LONG BEACH
With the powerful cause of making waves to fight cancer, the inaugural Swim Across America Long Beach event was both inspirational and successful.

THE DRAMA OF THE SPORT
Before he came out of the water, Craig knew that a certain question had to be answered. It wasn’t a question about his middle name or anything like that. It was much more profound. It was a question posed by himself, a question that only he could answer for himself. When Craig was able to answer that question, Hank embraced him and congratulated him on finishing the 5K with dignity.
