With the first day of summer, Wallace J. Nichols’ 100 Days of Blue campaign begins.

Dr. Nichols is an author, speaker, and researcher who created the Blue Mind Collective that annually and virtually brings together leading voices from diverse backgrounds including athletes, entrepreneurs, explorers, artists, neuroscientists and psychologists to update the way we value our wild waters on Planet Earth, to create a new story of water.

The deep-thinking innovator from California explains, “The reason is simple: the old story isn’t serving us well and is dangerously incomplete as it overlooks the vast cognitive, emotional, psychological and social benefits of healthy waters. Undervalued waters are consistently under-protected and over-degraded.

From June 21st to September 28th, the 100 Days of Blue is a way to engage more people in this conversation through the act of getting near, in, on or under their water daily and sharing their experiences widely. We encourage people to take someone new with them each time they go to the water
.”

The movement is accelerated through the sharing of blue marbles, hand to hand, around the world.

We work to keep the message simple and inclusive. The idea is to get people to think about their water, their local water, differently – to appreciate the cognitive, emotional, and social value of healthy waterways.

Since the book Blue Mind came out a year ago, I’ve given more than 100 talks and keynotes on this topic to a wide range of audiences. I often ask audiences, ‘When was the last time you were completely submerged?’

I’ve been surprised by the number of people who answer with a twinge of sadness, ‘Never.’ I hope through this work we are able to increase the number of people who answer that question by saying ‘Last week
.'”
