13 Is A Lucky Number In Tiburon

Bob Placak keeps on upping the ante on his vision for the ultimate swimming weekend.

The 13th annual RCP Tiburon Mile is expanding once again to the RCP Tiburon Sprint Classic with a slew of custom events featuring famous Olympians.

The 1.2-mile RCP Tiburon Mile will feature the same chilly, tricky course with its hellish start on Angel Island on September 9th. The start features a complete blind spot where the swimmers stand on the shore and stare out across the expanse of San Francisco Bay, only guessing which course is the best to take.

Nearly 900 swimmers compete in either the Elite, Age Group and Wetsuit divisions for cash and prizes. In the elite division, swimmers include Olympic and world champion swimmers from the USA, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico and Germany.

On September 8th the night before the swimmers sprint across the cold bay, race director Bob Placak will host the unique RCP Tiburon Sprint Classic. While the open water swimmers churn up the course from Angel Island to Tiburon, Placak has invited many of the fastest pool swimmers in the world to churn up a magnificent hillside pool overlooking San Francisco Bay.

The Sprint Classic features ten of the world’s fastest sprinters racing head-to-head in a two-lane, high-performance swim-off. The winner of the knockout competition will claim US$10,000. Returning champion Josh Schneider will go head-to-head against Frederick Bousquet, Ricky Berens and other Olympic sprinters.

Similar to the women taking it to the men in the Bay, there will be a Battle of the Sexes with some of the fastest women in swimming challenging 53-year-old 3-time Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines in sprint races.

And in a replay of old times, there will be a special Legends race between famed American Olympians Tom Jager and Matt Biondi.

Old and new, open water and pool, currents and calm. Placak has prepared it all for those heading to his RCP classics.
