Celebrating the Swimmers of the 20 Bridges Swim Around Manhattan: June 2024

Congratulations to all the open water swimmers who completed 20 Bridges this June.

Very special congratulations go to Kieron Palframan and Miranda Wingfield. By completing this swim, they achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.

During the 20 Bridges Swim, participants cover a challenging 28.5 miles (48.5 kilometers) around Manhattan through the East River, Harlem River and Hudson with amazing views of the New York skyline and famous landmarks.

The swim starts either at Pier A, Battery Park, or Mill Rock on the Upper East Side, depending on tidal conditions. It’s part of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, along with the English Channel and Catalina Channel. New York Open Water (NYOW) organizes the swim, offering professional services and guidance, safety, and ratifies and maintains the records of this historic open water marathon swim.

1) Swimming is punk rock
2) Something like “may the force be with me”
3) Reaching the more forested part of the island (even the water tastes different)
4) Passing by bridge #20 (spectacular sunset and you still have almost the whole island left to go)
5) Night falls and the conditions were beautiful
6) The night in Manhattan gets tougher or “for your safety, do not separate from the kayaker”
7) When everything gets difficult, there was nothing left but to look at that view of the city
8) Alex (kayaker and ace) and me
9) The most important part, the company and the motivation to always give your best

We had a dream and together we ran 48 km, 8 hours and 30 minutes side by side. There is nothing we cannot do with the strength and inspiration we get from each other! The reward of our efforts is on our necks for the same goal in water and on land – Instagram

Yesterday I jumped into the East River to swim the 20 bridges swim, a circumnavigation of Manhattan, and completed my triple crown. 👑👑👑 Today, I just wait till I grow a second head or become radioactive from swimming in that water and get to think about how grateful I am to have friends and family who support me, come to run around NYC just to see glimpses of me swimming, and those who cheer me on from a far and watch my progress on their screens it makes it so much easier. On June 6, @incessantloving and I will attempt the 28.5 mile swim around Manhattan Island, crewed by our friend @zachmargolis. On the other side of the world, the Israel-Gaza war continues to rage on. One child in Gaza is killed or wounded every 10 minutes (source: UN Human Rights commission, April 2024). We are using this swim to raise funds for the Palestinian Children’s Relief fund, which provides free medical care to Palestinian children and is highly rated by Charity Navigator. Please consider donating or sharing. Kerianne and I will be matching donations up to $200. Instagram

We did it! Almost 50k & 9hr 15mins of the roughest, brackish water we’ve ever swum. It was really tough, possibly the hardest swim I’ve ever done- I was sea sick for the first half, retching constantly, straining my neck & shoulders. It felt very long & was a challenge to fight those demons. Had to have a word with myself many times.

Thanks must go to the amazing Richard Saudan who fed us, motivated us, ran the WhatsApp group & put up with us generally. Lee Saudan, my absolute legend of a swim partner & all-round amazing person. Facebook

I love this event! This was my 2nd time swimming around Manhattan Island and it’s still a great experience. That time I did the night ride and in tandem. Why at night? Because Manhattan at night is absolutely beautiful!! What is a tandem swim? These are 2 solo swimmers swimming side by side the entire distance, without drafting and sharing the same escort boat. So Vianney and I each completed the swim in 8h 24m (unofficial time). Some highlights: – the swim started under storm waves with lightning, thunder and good waves but fortunately, it calmed down quickly – the city that never sleeps offered us party boats, fireworks and outdoor shows (even in the wee hours of the morning) – never again will I say Harlem River is clean… i have touched so many unknown and unnameable objects in the dark 🤢 – there are jellyfish in the Hudson River – the end of the night with the illuminated downtown and the Statue of Liberty. WOW 🤩 Thanks to my friend and training partner Vianney. I don’t know who first started this tandem idea, but one thing for sure, it’s been an honor to share this extraordinary experience with you. Thank you Charles for agreeing to come with us as a crew member on the boat. Work on the boat is so important to the success of a swim like this. Thanks to Christian for getting the kayak out again. I always feel safe when I’m swimming beside you. Thanks to Alex and everyone at NYOW for a spotless organization! Facebook

I’m in New York. Its hot, my family is here, and I’m ready to go for a swim!

I’m scheduled to attempt swimming the 28 mile circumnavigation of Manhattan on Saturday, 6/22, starting at 8:20pm local time. Really looking forward to swimming under a lit up skyline and a nearly full moon, and so grateful to be here with so much support after a bit of a rocky start to 2024.
