Alex Kostich – like the his colleagues and competitors in the 19.3 km Swim Around Charleston in South Carolina had to deal with intermittent and disrupted training.
But they persevered and competed. Kostich talks about his experiences before and during the event on WOWSA Live [see above].
Race director Kathleen Wilson said of her race she founded, “It has been such a challenging year for everyone and it was important to give it everything to make the swim take place this year. It is heartening to see swimmers, many with limited training, choosing to come and support the swim and support the Charleston community.
I chose to move ahead with this event for many reasons: the Governor encouraged careful reopening. Charleston is extremely tied to tourism, decimated since March. This was a small means of helping that industry. The marathon swimming community needed an option and for those who felt prepared to swim, an outlet. The Covid protocols were not the hardest part of this year’s event, it was the myriad of changeover in personnel among my vendors as well as a huge task of finding paddlers which unexpectedly fell to me. Regarding Covid, I simply followed existing ordinances and I used common sense to create as safe an environment as possible.
This was a difficult event to pull off this year for numerous reasons and the weather was dicey up until 2.5 hours before the start. It cleared nicely. Swimmers did have to work a bit though. This event has been a great one for a decade now, not super large but quiet and very effective.”
