Diana Nyad will warm-up swimming 24 hours nonstop beginning at 6 pm on April 20th in the Palm Springs Swim Center in the middle of the Southern California desert in order to benefit the Hurricane Sandy Relief fund. Nyad and her donors will be raising money to help the survivors of Hurricane Sandy which was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane in recent American history.
This weekend, Nyad will swim non-stop 24 hours in preparation for her 48-hour non-stop swim in a temporary pool built in the middle of Times Square, smack dab in the middle in New York City.
While the Palm Springs pool is set within a desert setting with mountains raising around the complex, Nyad will be surrounded by towering skyscrapers and thousands of onlookers as she swims in pool built right on the streets of Manhattan Island.
“I want you to swim with me for charity,” Nyad writes on her blog. “Find out why I’m swimming for charity and what this swim [on April 20th] is in big preparation for over Memorial Day weekend in New York City. Well-known New Yorkers as well as the public, will join me and show the victims of Hurricane Sandy, many virtually still homeless, that we have not forgotten them. Good Morning America will be our media partner, broadcasting live all three mornings.
