40 Sea Swims in 40 Days for Lent

Father Gary Deighton, Devon Victor of Goodrington & Collaton-St. Mary in Paignton, England is nearing the end of his 40 sea dips in 40 days for his Lent 2022 Challenge that ends of Easter Sunday, April 17th. Father Gary is raising money for YMCA South Devon’s Nightstop service with his personal aquatic sacrifice.

Paignton, on the English Riviera, is a seaside town on the coast of Tor Bay in Devon so it is relatively easy to walk down to the shoreline – but not so easy to walk into the cold water…no matter what the weather is. “I look to vicars in the area as well as community leaders to come and join me. There is only one rule – no wetsuits,” he mentioned at the start on March 2nd, Ash Wednesday. “Lent is a season of prayer and fasting, but fasting isn’t just about giving-up chocolate. I think it’s about giving up some of your comfort, and I’m doing that by going in the sea. I don’t like cold water or getting in the sea and I don’t like not knowing what is underneath me, but when you live so close to the sea you have to take advantage of it.

He is raising money for South Devon YMCA’s Nightstop service which helps young homeless people by providing emergency overnight accommodation.
