African Leading The FINA Marathon World Cup Series

It is coming down to the wire in next week’s finale on the 2010 FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup circuit. The young Chad Ho is leading the series with 112 total points and looks to be a lock to win – the first time anyone from the African continent will win the prestigious World Cup circuit.

But America’s Fran Crippen is right behind Chad (112 vs. 94 points) and could pull off the upset victory if Chad either fails to compete the swim (highly unlikely) or falls out of the top 20 (unlikely but possible if he is red-carded or injured during the race). Over the course of the 2010 World Cup season, several men in the Top 10 (see below) have been disqualified for several infractions and course deviations, so it will be interesting to see the outcome in the last event on October 23rd in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

1. Chad Ho (RSA), 112 points
2. Fran Crippen (USA), 94
3. Allan Do Carmo (BRA), 60
4. Sergiy Fesenko (AZE), 50
5. Alex Meyer (USA), 48
6. Petar Stoychev (BUL), 40
7. Thomas Lurz (GER), 38
7. Chip Peterson (USA), 38
9. Evgeny Drattsev (RUS), 32
10. Michael Dmitriev (ISR), 30
10. Brian Ryckman (BEL), 30
