Aisling Beacom Of The Wicklow Sea Swimming Club

Aisling Beacom, who started her career as a member of Wicklow Sea Swimming Club, is one of 126 swimmers who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. But this isn’t the first time that Aisling has represented Ireland on the international stage.

Through Special Olympics Ireland’s Athlete Leadership Programme she visited the United Nations in New York and developed a unique fundraising event for Special Olympics when she participated in the RCP Tiburon Mile in San Francisco.

Aisling will be joined in Athens, Greece at the Special Olympics World Summer Games by over 40 other open water swimmers including Andrew Smilley of the Cayman Islands and Nadja Joy Pannerup Tønnesen from Denmark. They will swim the 800-meters freestyle and the new 1.5K open water swim off the coast of Marathon as well as witness the POW (Pool Open Water) exhibition.
