Alex Meyer Zig-zags To Win The 25K World Championship
Alex Meyer, shown on left just finishing ahead of Valerio Cleri, in his second 25K race in his life, outswam, outfoxed and outsprinted the world’s best marathon swimmers at today’s world 25K championship. He beat the world 10K and 25K champion Valerio Cleri, over the last 50 meters in a gutsy, risky, stop-and-go maneuver at the end of the race.
In his own words, Alex described the last 1K in the race. “Valerio was pretty far in on the last backstretch. We were taking a different line to the last buoy and it would have been a perfect opportunity for me to go. But, I was tired.”
“I was confident in my sprint, so I held off toward the end. As we came around the last turn buoy [177 meters from the finish], we were sprinting and he cut me off. But I knew that never works.
