Aloha…Landmarks Seen By A Swimmer From Hawaii

Channel swimmer Michael Miller has seen his share of landmarks during the course of his open water swimming travels around the world.

First, the natural one…the sunrise over Molokai while swimming from Molokai to Oahu. It was very unforgettable. [On the opposite side of the Molokai Channel], the outline of Diamond Head on same swim as it shows up over your brow line in 4 foot swells,” says the Triple Crown swimmer from Honolulu.

On a shorter swim when you are swimming Au’Au (Maui) Channel, and you are in the middle, you are surrounded by islands. You can see Lanai, Molokai, Maui and the Iao Peak on Maui. It is a chicken skin moment.”

Then there are the lights strung up in the distance as well as homes and tankers that are memorable landmarks.

Standing on Molokai, seeing Oahu’s city lights glow is magnificent. Same with seeing a string of lights on France’s shoreline and you know you will stand next to them. Same with Yankee Stadium and all the bridges you swim under during the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, especially the George Washington Bridge as well as the Intrepid on the Hudson [River]. Also, during the Ederle Swim, heading under Tappan Zee Bridge, then seeing he Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Then there are the homes of Palos Verdes at the end of the Catalina Channel swim and the never-ending string of tankers and container ships in the English Channel…wondering at night, how close they really are.”

All these landmarks remain close to his heart.
