Amateur Records Of The 19th Century Open Water World

What were the times of open water swimming events in times past?

Charles Raphael, a fast local Jersey shore swimmer, set the amateur record for the half-mile distance on August 10th, 1895 when he swam 15 minutes 40 seconds in the Atlantic Ocean off Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Earlier in 1895, William Kugler set the world record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 31 seconds flat in a course set in the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
