Antonio Argüelles Completes a 24-hour Training Session in La Jolla

Antonio Argüelles is preparing for a 91.8 km double circumnavigation swim (40 Bridges) around Manhattan Island in New York City.

The Mexican dynamo is leaving nothing to chance. This last week he traveled from his native Mexico City to his Southern California training venue in La Jolla Cove. He completed a special 24-hour training session, escorted by famed kayaker Dan Simonelli.

The duo started at the La Jolla Shores Hotel at 11 am on May 20th and finished 24 hours later. Over the day-and-night session, Argüelles completed three separate 4-hour training swims in the 17°C Pacific Ocean.

Their schedule was as follows:

11 am – 3 pm: non-stop ocean swim
3 pm – 7 pm: rest in hotel
7 pm – 11 pm: non-stop ocean swim
11 pm – 3 am: rest in hotel
3 am – 7 am: non-stop ocean swim

Simonelli escorted Argüelles from La Jolla Cove to the Scripps Pier and all along the La Jolla coastline.

Argüelles said after he finished, “I am sleepy but not tired. I got cold during the second 4-hour swim.”

Simonelli commented, “He was strong throughout.” And so was Simonelli who guided Argüelles throughout the extended training session.

Onwards to Manhattan Island. Twice.
