As Summer Turns To Fall
As summer turns to fall, and fall turns to winter, many open water swimmers substitute their favorite open water venues to chlorinated pools in their areas during the winter months. One newly formed club in the Thames valley, Henley Open Water Swimming Club, will continue swimming. Club founder Tom Kean says, “We’ve had a really mild time of it recently, and when other clubs have been stopping because that seems the thing to do, we have a hard core of up to 10 swimmers who are keen to keep going. We take a few more precautions, but are still able to safely do a mile or two before it feels slightly too cold. We even have some skins swimmers who are experienced and well supported by their suited friends. We’ll keep going as long as we can until the drive to the river ceases to be worth it – most people can bare a quick dunking, but we’d rather have a bit of a swim as well“.

Served on the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee and as Technical Delegate with the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, and 9-time USA Swimming coaching staff.
