Bad luck hit a trio of famous open water swims across America this month.

First it was the Waikiki Roughwater Swim in Hawaii, then it was the RCP Tiburon Mile in San Francisco, and then finally it was the annual Big Shoulders race held in Lake Michigan. Big Shoulders was concurrently serving as the 2015 United States Masters Swimming 5K Open Water National Championship.

The three major open water swimming competitions this month were cancelled for various reasons.

Each of the race directors made and stuck by their decisions despite complaints from a handful of disappointed swimmers. But most participants recognized the situation and understood the cancellations were due to heavy surf, unexpected tidal conditions, and poor weather. And many – like the young ladies above on the shores of Lake Michigan – took the time to smile and have fun.
