Beauty And The Beast In Cozumel

Beauty And The Beast In Cozumel

The beauty is in the gorgeous tropical waters of Cozumel.

The beast will be the hard-fought race among 129 professional marathon swimmers who have gathered in Cozumel, Mexico for this week’s high-pressure, gut-checking FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup.

The world’s best – short of Keri-Anne Payne, Eva Ristzov and Ous Mellouli – will be in Cozumel. It the last time these elite athletes all meet before July’s FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona. 80 men will start at 10:00 am followed 5 minutes later with 59 women in an 8-loop, 1250m course. With so many fast swimmers along the course, there is undoubtedly going to be a lot of whitewater.

The athletes say that the currents are really strong along the course, so strategy will really come into play. But the currents shift unexpectedly and the athletes will wait until race day to learn if the currents will be against or with or lateral to the course.

The course is gorgeous with turquoise, stingrays, and tropical fish all over the crystal-clear water. In the Hotel El Cozumeleño Beach Resort, in the pool, in the buffet lines in the restaurant, and on the beach, the athletes are smiling and relaxed which is sure to change come race time.
