Before There Was Guri, There Was Manaia
Before Guri Bosch, a 3-year-old labrador retriever, won the Canine Division of the 5-mile crossing of Lake Willoughby in Vermont in 2013, there was Manaia.Manaia was a 5-year-old Labrador-Irish setter that defeated 200 of the 613 humans in the 1980 Waikiki Roughwater Swim, completing the 2.4-mile swim in 90 minutes.

Southern California native, born 1962, is the creator of the WOWSA Awards, Oceans Seven, Openwaterpedia, Citrus Corps, World Open Water Swimming Association, Daily News of Open Water Swimming, Global Open Water Swimming Conference. Hummer Award (2007, 2010) and Harvard University's John B. Imrie Award (1984). Served on the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee and as Technical Delegate with the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, and 9-time USA Swimming coaching staff.
