Best Fest 2024: Celebrating a Decade of Open Water Triumphs in Scenic Mallorca

Last week, Best Fest marked its 10th anniversary in the crystal clear and lively waters of Colonia Sant Jordi, Mallorca. Renowned for its pristine waters, this annual open water swimming event drew an eclectic mix of participants from elite national teams to enthusiastic amateurs, offering a week-long competition from May 24 to May 31.

The festival began in waters that were a brisk 20.2°C (68.5°F), warming slightly to just above 21°C (70°F) as the days passed, setting the stage for intense competition and communal joy. The opening event was a spirited 5k swim from point to point, challenging competitors across various categories, from wetsuit-clad racers to traditional skins. The competitive drive was palpable as swimmers not only sought top rankings in their age groups but also sprinted fiercely to the finish line.

The event lineup was diverse, ensuring appeal to various skill levels and preferences. Best Fest’s schedule included the Colonia Classic 1, a 5km swim with divisions for both wetsuit and non-wetsuit competitors; Colonia Classic 2, featuring brisk 1.5km races; and the Es Carbó Italian Volcano 3km event. A standout was the intriguing “Tell me your time” 2.5km swim, requiring participants to predict their finish times.

The highlight for many was the Colonia Classic 3 with longer distances of 7km and 10km.

Beyond the races, Best Fest is characterized by its vibrant community atmosphere. Participants celebrated their shared passion through post-race festivities, including raffles with coveted prizes like a rare pink swimming cap that symbolized the event’s unique charm.

Social events peppered throughout the week, from tasting local delicacies like ensaimadas and paella to enjoying leisurely walks along the beach, and relishing the clear waters and marine life of the Mediterranean. The week included an open water pro clinic with Paul Newsome from Swim Smooth and a talk by Ross Edgley on long distance swimming techniques.

Matthew O’Connor, Founder of BEST FEST said,

“BEST FEST’s 10th edition was an amazing event, enjoyed by everyone in the stunning sea around our lovely little town of Colonia Sant Jordi. It’s always a massive pleasure to see people return each year as well as to meet so many like-minded new people from as far afield as Australia or USA. The BEST FEST brings us all together as a swimming family and it is by far the highlight of my year to share so many fun times and great memories with so many lovely people. I can’t wait for next year!”

Once again, Best Fest showcased itself as a standout event on the open water swimming calendar, offering a fulfilling experience for all participants as a must-attend for open water swimmers.
