Big News Expected Out Of The Triathlon World

The Daily News of Open Water Swimming is guessing that the sport of triathlon will make some major announcements at this weekend’s 2012 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where nearly 1,300 collegiate triathletes will vie for individual and team national titles in an Olympic-distance race (1500m swim + 40 km bike + 10 km run) and triathlon relays.

The sport of triathlon is one of the most popular sports in the Olympics and annually generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for the World Triathlon Corporation and licensees of the Ironman brand. The sport is a lifestyle where the average Ironman entry costs more than US$525. But with the average household income of the Ironman triathlete at US$161,000,, the sport continues to blossom even during times of economic downturns.

With that kind of economic power and participants, the triathlon community can expect big things and at least a few major announcements during this Olympic year. Richard Izzo, president of the Westchester Triathlon Club, explains, “The people who do this sport are wealthy type-A personalities.”

While open water swimmers usually can expect the unexpected in their world, expectations are usually exceeded in the triathlon world.
