Britta Kamrau Remembers Her Friendships, Her Career On WOWSA Live
Sponsored by KAATSU Global, Huntington Beach, California.International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer Britta Kamrau spoke about her incredibly successful professional marathon swimming career – and the friendships she made across the world – on today’s WOWSA Live program.
The German star won 10 FINA World Championship medals between 2002 and 2007 including 4 gold medals from 5 km to 25 km. Over the course of her career, she also won the 2003 and 2006 FINA World Cup Series and finished 2nd in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005 with a total of 78 podium finishes (24 being first place).
During her interview with International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame chairperson Ned Denison, she recalled:
* remembering her early competitive start when she followed in the wake of teammates Christof Wandratsch and Peggy Büchse in Rostock, Germany
* setting a Guinness World Record as a relay member 157 km in 40 hours across the Baltic Sea from Trelleborg, Sweden
* gaining confidence by winning a bronze medal in the European Championships in the 5 km at the age of 16 in 1999 in Istanbul and another bronze in the 25 km at the age of 17 years in 1998
* facing her fears of the cold water
* remembering the challenge and uniqueness of swimming around Atlantic City and her host family with whome she stayed for 3 years [see below]
* sweeping the awards podium in the 5 km, 10 km and 25 km in a lake outside of Madrid Spain at the 2004 LEN European Championships
* racing against rival Edith van Dijk and Angela Maurer
* advising FINA members on the Technical Open Water Swimming Committee
