Chip Carrigan provided reason for keeping the Buddy System in the open water and avoid solo, unescorted open water swims:
“In scuba diving (PADI & SSI), solo diving is highly discouraged. Since 1989, there were at least 538 fatalities where it was clear divers were either intentionally diving solo, or became separated from a buddy and were alone.”
Additionally, visit here to see a bite from a harbor seal. The wound was incurred by an open water swimmer in San Francisco during a swim 400 yards offshore. Please note this is a graphic wound before clicking on the link.
