Bushtukah Bring On The Bay Is Back

Bushtukah Bring on the Bay 3K Open Water Swim in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada has something for everyone.

We provide a very popular swim bag made and provided by Genco Marine with lots of prizes for winners, leading fundraisers, and random winners. Everyone has a chance to win something at the luau party in the evening where all the proceeds go to Easter Seals Ontario,” said race director Richard Pessah.

The Bring on the Bay 3K Open Water Swim is scheduled for July 14th in the 73-77°F (23-25°C) waters of the Ottawa River.

But is more like a lake and is appropriately called Lac Deschenes. Our swim is in Britannia Bay within Lac Deschenes within the Ottawa River – is that confusing?

We have a wonderful water safety team.”

It consists of kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, motorboats, and sailboats anchored along the course to provide a cheering section. Additionally, the local police department has provided support from their marine unit and some of the kayakers are doctors and nurses.

Its growth is typical. In 2007, a triathlete came up with the idea of a point-to-point swim to the Britannia Yacht Club as a fundraiser. 12 participants swam the 3K distance. 22 swimmers participated the following year with 80 swimmers in the 3rd year, 180 swimmers in the 4th year and 307 swimmers ages 12 to 72 last year in both non-wetsuit and wetsuit age groups with a wave start for those reluctant to swim with the main pack. “We expect over 400 swimmers in this, our 6th year, and raised over $30,000 for Easter Seals last year.”

Only thunderstorms, low visibility or strong northwesterly winds resulting in high waves will delay or stop the swim. We have never had a mishap to date but are prepared,” explained Richard. “All those who started, have finished the swim with a great sense of accomplishment. Primarily, we want to keep the event enjoyable for all while maintaining the goal of raising funds for Easter Seals.”
