California Beaches Closed Due To Shark Attack

19-year-old Lucas Ransom, a junior at University of California Santa Barbara, was a victim of a shark attack at the Vanderberg Air Force Base beach near Lompoc, California, 130 miles north of Los Angeles. The sudden attack came 100 yards from shore as the two friends were boogie-boarding.

The Associated Press reported on the tragedy here.

As a result, Surf, Wall and Minuteman beaches were closed for at least 72 hours after the attack.

Fatal shark attacks are rare in the area. A great white shark killed a swimmer in 2003 at Avila Beach, another individual in 2004 in Mendocino and another swimmer in 2008 in San Diego.
