Cat Wins Swim Around Manhattan Island

Catherine Breed is a former world-class freestyler in the pool.  This year, she has effectively transitioned very smoothly to channel swimming (North Channel), bay swimming (San Francisco Bay), lake swimming (Lake Berryessa), and now river swimming (20 Bridges Swim). She won the 45.9 km 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan Island, New York winning in 6 hours 54 minutes just ahead of 41-year-old Bob Tarr. Tenth-place finisher Monica Bender finished in 8 hours 11 minutes to complete a nearly 7-year journey to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.  In 2012, she crossed the Catalina Channel in 9 hours 51 minutes at the age of 16; in 2015, she crossed the English Channel from England to France in 14 hours 41 minutes at the age of 20 winning the Pierre Van Vooren Memorial Trophy by the Channel Swimming Association for the Swim in the most Arduous Conditions.  Yesterday, she sewed up her Triple Crown credentials with a successful circumnavigation swim around Manhattan Island.
