Celebrating the 2023 World Oceans Day: Planet Ocean – Tides Are Changing

World Oceans Day is an annual celebration initiated by the United Nations in 2008. This event as a powerful reminder of the ocean’s indispensable role in sustaining all life on Earth, and the mounting challenges it confronts the ocean confronts

Through a captivating array of in-person and virtual events and campaigns, the United Nations has cultivated an inclusive and vibrant platform that has ignited widespread awareness to effect meaningful change for the ocean and our precious blue planet.

With the theme “Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing,” this year’s World Oceans Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the profound connection between a healthy planet and a healthy ocean.

The event showcased an extraordinary lineup of keynote speeches, presentations, and panels featuring influential figures such as Oceanographer Sylvia Earle, Aquanaut Fabien Cousteau, Actor Jason Momoa, and numerous others. Their collective wisdom and unwavering passion inspired participants to recognize the ocean’s profound significance and its pivotal role in addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and biodiversity conservation.

Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs (DOALOS) in partnership with Oceanic Global and supported by Panerai, with contribution by Discover Earth and OceanX.

World Oceans Day also heralded the commencement of World Ocean Week, a dedicated period to delve deeper into the theme of “Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing” and amplify the clarion call to “Put the Ocean First.” Paramount challenges faced by our oceans, including rising temperatures, sea level rise, acidification, plastic pollution, and the degradation of ecosystems, were underscored as urgent issues that demand immediate and resolute action.

As subsequent events unfold, impassioned ocean advocates from around the world, alongside members of Friends of UN World Oceans Day, will continue to engage in transformative dialogue and endeavor to forge a brighter future for our oceans and our planet as a whole. By recognizing our profound interconnectedness with the ocean and collaborating collectively to protect it, we can secure a sustainable legacy for generations to come.
