Claire Weinstein Wins the USA Swimming National and Junior Championship 5K Title

Over the last two decades, there have been many great open water races in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. This past weekend was no exception at the USA Swimming Open Water National and Junior Championships between April 1st – 3rd.

On Day Two of the three-day championships, it was time for the younger swimmers to be featured.

Sandpipers of Nevada’s Claire Weinstein continued the dominance of the Sandpipers of Nevada who have long developed a corp of strong distance freestylers, both in the pool and the open water.

Weinstein and second-place finisher Abigail Miller qualified for the FINA World Junior Open Water Championships in September 1-4 in Beau Vallon, Seychelles.

Weinstein, similar to her Sandpiper teammate Katie Grimes in the 10 km race on Day One, finished first in 1:06:08 – just more than a minute ahead of the rest of the field.  She told USA Swimming, “It felt really good. It’s nice that we have [international] trips since last year they were cancelled.”

Miller finished second in 1:07:19. The Mission Viejo Nadadore athlete told USA Swimming, “It feels amazing. I honestly wasn’t expecting it. I just came out here to have fun and race and see what happens.”
