James Whelan (born 8 November 1948 – died August 2017) is an American politician, teacher, lifeguard , race director , and open water swimmer . He was also the Mayor of Atlantic City , New Jersey and inductee as an Honour Administrator of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in the Class of 2001. He received the 1999 Gold Medallion from the International Swimming Hall of Fame .
