Jöns Svanberg (1771-1851) was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Uppsala, a position to which he was appointed in 1794 at the age of 23. Swimming in Sweden at that time was virtually non-existent. Svanberg formed Upsala Simsällskap in 1796 together with some like-minded academics to improve the lack of swimming skills.
