The Odd Couple” is a nickname for blind untethered swimmer Mark Rew and his long-time friend, coach, and swim guide, open water butterflier Brian Suddeth . They got the nickname at their gym and among local open water swimmers as it is unusual to have a partnership of two athletes, each setting unprecedented swim records in separate disciplines. Suddeth introduced Rew to Total Immersion freestyle swimming in 2014 order to help Rew achieve a goal of completing an open water mile swim, and Rew has since completed several events at that distance and further, often being the first blind athlete to complete that event. Suddeth frequently swims in butterfly while guiding Rew’s open water swims which catches many people’s attention and lead to the nickname.
