Authentic Marathon Swim (Greece) – World Open Water Swimming Association

According to the written works of ancient historians, Skyllias and his daughter Hydna were the world’s first marathon swimmers to be acknowledged globally. In honor of the first long distance swimmers recorded in documented history in 480 BC, the Authentic Marathon Swim takes place in the Straits of Artemision, the location of the 3-day naval battle between the Greeks and Persians.

About

Authentic Marathon Swim offers multiple races: 800m, 1.5 km, 3 km, 5km and 10 km and gives swimmers opportunities of replicating the historical achievement of Skyllias and Hydna. Participants swim over the shipwrecks of the Artemision naval battle.

Why it was Nominated

For drawing on Greek history to show the roots of open water swimming and enabling modern-day swimmers to experience similar conditions that Skyllias and Hydna has faced in 480 BC or over 2,500 years ago.
