DC Marathon Swim (USA) – World Open Water Swimming Association

The DC Marathon Swim is a challenging swim in 2021 with a 33 km jaunt from Fletcher’s Cove to Mount Vernon in Washington D.C.

About

The Potomac River’s tidal flow, currents, changing winds, and October water temperatures challenge a swimmer’s open water skills and endurance. Each mile of the Potomac River takes the swimmer past the monuments and scenery that makes Washington D.C. special. The swim was founded by marathon swimmers Jim Loreto and Denis Crean.

Why it was nominated

For tenaciously lobbying the Department of Energy for years to obtain a race permit to reopen the Potomac River to swimmers after nearly a century.
