Florian Wellbrock won the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games marathon swim with a thoroughly dominating performance – never before seen in the previous Olympics in 2008, 2012, or 2016. The gold medal was his second after winning bronze in the 1500m freestyle 7 days previously and finishing 4th in the 800m freestyle. At the 2021 World Championships, Wellbrock won bronze medal in the 4×1500m mixed relay, a gold medal in the 10 km, and set a new world record in the 1500m freestyle in the pool.
