Freedom Swimmer is a documentary film about a man’s story of his perilous swim from China to Hong Kong during the Cultural Revolution.


The 15-minute short-form documentary was written and directed by Hong Kong-based filmmaker Olivia Martin-McGuire. The hybrid, poetic documentary interweaves hand-drawn animation and film.

The story of a marathon swimmer who wishes to immigrate to a new country is filled with drama, peril, and risks that is captured dramatically by director Olivia Martin-McGuire.
