Joel Matos Ortiz set the record for the shortest elapsed time to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming: 27 days while raising money for the Special Olympics Puerto Rico. 9 days after he completed a 32.3 km Catalina Channel in 11 hours 56 minutes on July 16th, he completed the 45.9 km 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan Island in New York on July 25th in 8 hours 13 minutes, and then completed the 33.5 km English Channel from England to France in 13 hours 41 minutes.

Why he was nominated

For achieving the Triple Crown in record time while living and training in a warm water country and for believing in himself and his physical and mental preparations while raising money for others with dreams and goals.
