John Batchelder (USA) – World Open Water Swimming Association

John “Butterfly” Batchelder became the fourth person to swim butterfly across the 33.5 km English Channel, flying across in 16 hours 13 minutes.

About

Batchelder typically swims at least 3 long and difficult swims every year. 2021 was no different. He followed up his butterfly English Channel crossing with a 91.8 km 40 Bridges – Double Manhattan Island Swim in 20 hours 32 minutes and a subsequent 42 km crossing of the Molokai Channel in 14 hours 11 minutes.

Why he was nominated

For continuing to push the limits of his endurance and dedication to the sport of marathon swimming and channel crossing, and for swimming to keep in shape, to push myself, to have fun, and for all the friends he has gained along the way.
