Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli (Italy) – World Open Water Swimming Association

Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli is a 36 km professional and amateur marathon swim from the island of Capri to the city Napoli on the mainland of Italy. Part of the FINA UltraMarathon Swim Series, it is annually one of the World’s Top 100 Island Swims that began in 1954.

The world’s fastest professional and amateur marathon swimmers from 48 countries have gathered in Italy for 68 years in this mid-summer classic. The race is now open to qualified amateurs in a separately held race.

Why it was Nominated

For its historical significance as a past world championship and annual professional marathon race, it has all the fanfare, media attention, and professionalism expected at the highest level of the sport, and for its unpredictability of conditions and currents in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
