Known as Madame Butterfly with Down’s Syndrome, Motchman is a key member of the Spirit Orcas. Together with coach Susan Simmons and the rest of the Spirit Orcas, she completed an 8-week 80 km stage swim, as well as a 5 km solo lake swim on Vancouver Island in her native British Columbia – with a goal to finish a 10 km marathon swim.
Why she was nominated
For demonstrating what is possible for individuals – with or without Down’s Syndrome in the open water when there is sufficient motivation and commitment, and for always appreciating and supporting her coach, teammates, and volunteer escort crew.
