Merle Liivand completed a 30 km swim in Miami Beach, Florida to reset her own mermaid swim world record in 9 hours 19 minutes. The “Mermaid of Miami” uses this form of athletic expression to serve as an ocean activist. She speaks, she markets, she organizes events to encourage others to join her passionate appeal.

Why she was nominated

For being tenacious in her drive to make a difference in ocean conservation, for her infectious compassion to help preserve the marine environment and call attention to climate issues, and for continuing to set the global standard in mermaid swimming while still competing in marathon and cold water swimming events.
