About
With veteran Monterey Bay swimmers on her escort boat, Catherine Breed swam through a cold, foggy night across the 40 km Monterey Bay in California, while effectively blinded by the conditions, finishing in 12 hours 42 minutes, the fastest time in history.
Why it was nominated
For fighting through the pain of jellyfish stings and trusting in her escort crew despite being disoriented by fog and cold to finish a fast Monterey Bay crossing in a transition from warm-water chlorinated pools to the cold Pacific Ocean.
