The Crippen Sunset Mile

As part of Fran Crippen’s legacy, The Crippen Sunset Mile will be added to the championship schedule at the 2011 USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships to be held on Ft. Myers Beach in Florida next June.

It was an event that Fran himself had been planning before his tragic death.

Gregg Cross, race director for the championships, explains, “We added The Crippen Sunset Mile because Fran and I had been working on an event for June, up to the day we lost him. Our idea is to do a swim: safe, simple and inexpensive. All proceeds will now go to the Fran’s foundation. This annual event will be held whenever and wherever the open water national championships are held.”

The schedule for the championships are as follows:

June 9th: Course opens
June 10th: 9:00 am – USA Swimming 10K World Team Trials
June 11th: 7:45 am – Swimming Canada 10K World Team Trials
June 11th: 8:00 am – U.S. Masters Swimming 10K National Championships (water start, beach finish)
June 11th: 7:00 pm – Crippen Sunset Mile (USA Swimming and U.S. Masters Swimming with water start, beach finish)
June 12th: 9:00 am – USA Swimming 5K National Championships
June 12th: 10:15 am – Swimming Canada 5K National Championships
June 12th: 10:30 am – 5K Florida Swimming Seniors Championships, Florida-Gold Challenge
June 12th: 10:45 am – 5K Florida Swimming 13-14 Championships, Florida-Gold Challenge
June 12th: 11:45 am – 1.5K Florida Swimming 11-12 Championships, Florida-Gold Challenge
June 12th: 12:15 am – 800-meter Florida Swimmng 10&U Championships
