Danie Marais Defeats Ho At Sanlam Cape Mile

Speedo’s Danie Marais had what it took to stand on a top the podium at the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile swim, near Cape Town, South Africa.
The 22-year-old Marais finished in 17:41, a second ahead of Brown in 17:40 with the King of Midmar Mile Ho a very surprising third in 17:44 at Eikenhoff Dam, Grabouw.
The trio of South African stars were neck-and-neck throughout the 1.6 km route, but it was Marais who turned the tables on Ho, the 6-time Midmar Mile winner. Marias said, “I am thrilled to have won the first ever Sanlam Cape Mile. It was a tight race and congratulations to Myles and Chad who pushed me all the way.”
Michelle Weber won the women’s division in 18:48 followed by Carmen Le Roux.
Speedo South Africa President Stuart Hopwood commented, “The event was incredibly well organised and a welcome addition to South Africa’s open water swim calendar. We’re incredibly proud of Danie and Chad and we congratulate [the 1,000+ swimmers] who took part.”
