Dario Verani Realizes His Dream, Wins World 25K Championship

Dario Verani of Italy won his first FINA World Championship title in the the 25 km marathon swim held in Lake Lupa, Hungary this morning.

It was a close race where he upset the two-time defending world 25 km champion Axel Reymond of France by a mere 1.2 seconds. The University of Pisa graduate explained his strategy and post-race thoughts, “I swam at the foot of [Axel Reymond], the French favorite. I knew I had something more in the last hundred meters. This is a dream come true, much bigger than [my] European bronze in the 5 km. Few believed it, but I knew it. This gold is for my family, for the Army Sports Center, and in particular for my coach Fabrizio Antonelli. This race tests you physically, mentally.”
