Denise Brown Was Ready For A New Challenge

Back in 2008, Denise Brown of Ohio was ready for something different, something new, something unique. But she took an unusual route to get there: through the public library.

I was ready for a new challenge and looking for something different,” said the chaplain for St. John’s Lutheran Church. “I was 48 years old at the time. When some people told me, ‘No way you can do it,’ their words fueled me. So I entered the 25 km marathon swim at the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championships in Noblesville (Indiana). I went to the library and checked out the only book I could find on open water swimming [by Penny Dean]. I read it and learned about open water swimming.

I trained and, on race day, I felt great. The water was warm and I like the water warm. But before the race, I asked my congregation if anyone wanted to be my kayaker.

I received lots of help and finished in 6 hours 53 minutes and won my age group, the fourth overall woman
